Factions of the Dreamlands
The Dreamless Slumber
Before one can begin to understand the Dreamlands, one must understand what lies beyond. The Dreamless Slumber is a place, just like the Dreamlands. It is also a sentient being, just as the Dreamers. Dreamless is nothing, and nothing can be Dreamless. Its children are much easier to understand. The Children of the Dreamless are commonly known as the Watch, and exist to keep order among the Dreamers and the Waking World.
The Watch
- First Watch. The first of the Dreamless' children. It has worn many faces in many times. Though it is the Watch's leader, it tends to stay back and only deal with its siblings. There are a few instances, however, in which it has stepped in personally to deal with the Waking World. It is often represented as a Human.
- Day Watch. The second of the Dreamless' children. It is known to be fond of watching humans, though rarely interacts. In the Watch, it is often the main enforcer in violent disputes, as it is the heaviest hitter of the group. It is often represented as a Lion.
- Evening Watch. The third of the Dreamless' children. The least is known of Evening Watch, as she is rarely written about and encountered even less. She is often represented as a pierrot
- Night Watch. Night Watch is the youngest and most documented child of the Dreamless. It finds pleasure in interfering with human visitors to the Dreamlands, as well as Dreamers. It seems to derive much joy from watching things fall apart, like a child with a toy, though it is careful not to contradict its mission of order. It is often represnted as an owl.
- Pocket Watch. It is unknown where this creature falls in the Dreamless family. It is represented by a Rabbit.
- Hermes(The Messenger, The Minuteman). While not a child of the Dreamless, Heremes most definitely carries a large piece of it. It is unknown where he comes from and who or what he used to be, but if any creature of the Dreamless could be called human, it would be him. His primary role seems to be as a first responder, as he is quite possibly the fastest entity in the Dreamlands. No relation to the Greek myth.
Prelude
There are those which came before all other Dreamers, those who came before the Dreamlands. Their origins are unknown. In the current age of Dreamers, they are regarded as gods, above all kings. While subject to the Watch, they have come to consider themselves untouchable rulers. It is certain, though, with the ever shifting nature of Dreams, that they will not last much longer.
- Hyperion(The King of Dreams). It presides over sleep, and those who Dream. Little else is known about Hyperion.
- Apollyon(The Warden). Apollyon, better known as Apollyon of the Pit, is the warden of a ghastly realm known as the Pit of Angels. The Pit of Angels, being a prison for Dreamers surely contains horrors beyond comprehension. Pray, dear reader, you never see it. Apollyon has a small following in the Waking World, being misattributed as the god Apollo.
Dreamers
Those who exist beyond the confines of the Waking World. Dreamers are locked in an eternal sleep, manifesting themselves in the Dreamlands with varying degrees of power- some are kings of powerful nations, others are solitary creatures. It is generally best to stay away from Dreamers.
- Hastur(The King in Yellow, the Mad King of Carcosa). The King in Yellow is one of the most ancient dreamers. The ruler of Carcosa, a city as beautiful as it is terrible. He is often associated with art, specifically theater.
- The Ocean. The Ocean is greedy, obsessed with the ideas of love and devotion, while lacking the ability to fully understand either. It constantly eats away at the shore, reaching for that it can never have.
- The Golden Stag. The Golden Stag is considered to be, if not literally, the mother of all fauna in and of the dreamlands. Her ritual, the Hunt, can only be carried out by one party at a time, though many seek after its boon of immortality.
- The Piper(Incessant Music, the Traveling King). The Piper rules over a large, nomadic kingdom of creatues from a variety of origins. Associated with revelry, those who hear the music of the Piper are driven to madness, and then become one of his own.
Human Factions
Many humans of the Waking Word become involved somehow with the Dreamlands. These people are to be watched out for, and often avoided, if one wishes to keep their mind sound.
Lidenbrock
Most humans choose to stay away from the Dreamlands. Some, however, find themselves enamoured with them. Lidenbrock is a sort of honeytrap for this kind of person. They claim to seek to explore and understand the Dreamlands, though most evidence points to their intentions being more akin to exploitation than exploration. Based in Boston, MA.
- Godot. While not the head of the organization, Godot is a sort of ringleader. He calls the shots on the ground level, and the higher-ups let him do as he pleases. While on his own not a threat, he is overly ambitious, and should be treated with caution. His goal, though he seems loathed to admit it, is to create a weapon to end the War before the folks at Los Alamos.
Rhododendron
Rhododendron is a fascinating town, which needs it's own paper to fully understand. The town, though only a few hundred strong, seems to have been built around otherworldly powers. Specifically, the founding memembers, the Kiplings and the Fosters, are caught up in the perpetual Hunt of the Golden Stag. While a beautiful spot to visit if you're in West Virginia, moving there is not recommended.
- Tiberius Kipling. A mining tycoon and the founder of Rhododendron. While legally dead, Tiberius lives on through his sons, in the most literal sense, as the Golden Stag's ritual allows immortality through stealing the bodies of his children. The whole ordeal is quite disturbing.
- Eustace Kipling. The son of Tiberius, and current heir to the Kipling family fortune.
- Lily Kipling(deceased). Eustace's younger sister. She was quite close with the eldest Foster boy. Ritualistically killed in the Golden Stag's hunt.
- Robert Foster(deceased). An old friend of Tiberius' and the first Hunter in the Foster family. Whether or not he consented to this role has been lost to time, however he was dutiful in passing down the tradition.
- Anne Foster. A former Hunter.
- William Foster. The eldest Foster child and current Hunter. After the Hunt, he fled to Arkham, MA, where he would attend university
- Elizabeth Foster The eldest Foster daughter.
